Import - AutoCAD dxf dwg File

Form:  Import DXF File, Import Information, DXF Import

A *.dxf file is an AutoCAD Drawing Interchange File. This file format can be read by many graphics programs and is commonly used to exchange drawings between programs. The DXF file import feature is intended to facilitate importing model geometry from AutoCAD, including AutoCAD r14, AutoCAD 2000 and AutoCAD2002, and other DXF compatible programs.

Follow these steps to import an AutoCAD file into SAP2000:

  1. Click the File menu > New Model or File menu > Open command to start a new model or open an existing model, respectively. A .dxf file can be imported into an existing model or a file that has the coordinate system defined (for example, the Grid Only template has been used to initialize the model file).

  2. Click the File menu > Import > AutoCAD .dxf/.dwg File command to display the Import DXF File form.

    1. Use the Look in drop-down list to set the path and use the File name drop-down list to select the filename.

    2. Click the Open button to display the Import Information form.

      1. Use Import Information form to specify the global up direction and the units of the AutoCAD file.

      2. Click the OK button to access the DXF Import form.

        1. Select from the drop-down lists the layers to be imported from the DXF file for each SAP2000 element type. A layer can only be used for one element type. If no data is to be imported for a given element type, select NONE in the corresponding list box.

        2. Click the OK button to complete the import.

The SAP2000 element types correspond to the following DXF element types:
