Hinges - Wall

Form: Shell Assignment - Hinges

A hinge assignment consists of a hinge property located at the mid-height of the wall object.

Assign nonlinear wall hinges to wall objects assigned wall section properties as follows:

Note: These wall hinge assignments may only be made to walls that utilize a concrete material with geometry that is vertical, planar, and rectangular in shape. Hinges may not be assigned to walls with a modeling type of layered.

  1. Select the wall objects to which the assignment is to be made.

  2. Select the Assign menu > Shell > Wall Hinge command to access the Shell Assignment - Hinges form.

  3. Add, modify, or delete a hinge assignment as follows:

Note: If the Auto option is selected from the Hinge Property drop-down list, the Auto Hinge Assignment Data form will display when the Add button is clicked. Use that form to specify the Auto Hinge Type based on tables in ASCE 41-13. Also, when an Auto hinge type definition is highlighted in the Hinge Property drop-down list on the Shell Assignment - Hinges form, the Auto Hinge Assignment Data area will display key parameters of the hinge definition. In addition, the Modify/Show Auto Hinge Assignment Data button will become available. Clicking that button will display the Auto Hinge Assignment Data form.

  1. Click the Apply button to complete the assignment.

When the Apply button is used, the Shell Assignments - Hinges form will remain open until it is closed by clicking the Close button. This allows selection of another wall object(s), to which different assignments can be made.

If only one assignment  is being made to only one set of selected objects, the OK button can be used to both apply the assignment and close the form'

Multiple nonlinear hinges can be assigned to the same wall object, e.g., Shear V2 and Interacting P-M3. However, this may make it difficult to interpret some of the results.
