Use the Frame Hinge Property Data for {Property Name} form to define force controlled frame hinge properties. The options available on the form depend on the type of hinge being defined. The forms for all force-controlled hinge types, except Fiber, are generally the same. The form for Fiber (P-M2-M3) differs significantly from the others and is described in a separate topic (see Frame Hinge Property Data for {Property Name} - Fiber for more information).
For Axial P, Shear V2, Shear V3, Torsion T, Moment 2, and Moment 3
Maximum Allowed {Force, Moment} area.
Specified Proportion of Yield {Force, Moment} option and Positive and Negative edit boxes. When this option is selected, use the edit boxes to specify the proportion of the yield force or moment. The value specified will be multiplied by the maximum allowed force or moment. The Negative edit box becomes enabled when the Hinge is Symmetric check box near the bottom of the form is not checked.
User Specified {Force, Moment} option and Positive and Negative edit boxes. When this option is selected, use the edit boxes to specify the maximum allowed force or moment. The Negative edit box becomes enabled when the Hinge is Symmetric check box near the bottom of the form is not checked.
Hinge Loses All Load Carrying Capacity When Maximum {Force, Moment} Is Reached check box. When this check box is checked, the hinge capacity drops to zero after the maximum force or moment is reached. When the check box is unchecked, the hinge behavior is linear elastic.
Hinge is Symmetric (Tension Behavior Same as Compression Behavior) check box. When this check box is checked, this hinge definition will be symmetric. Any changes made to the values in the Positive edit boxes (tension) of the form will apply automatically to the Negative values (compression).
Acceptance Criteria area. The Acceptance Criteria IO (Immediate Occupancy), LS (Life Safety) and CP (Collapse Prevention) values are deformations (displacements, strains, or rotations) that have been normalized by the same deformation scale factors used to specify the load deformation curve, and are typically located between points B and C and points B’ and C’ on the curve. They are used to indicate the state of the hinge when viewing the results of the analysis, but they do not affect the behavior of the structure.
For Interacting P-M2, P-M3, M2-M3, and P-M2-M3
Capacity Factor Defining Lower Bound Strength
Capacity Factor edit box. Use this edit box to specify the capacity factor defining the lower bound strength of the hinge. The lower bound strength of the force controlled interacting hinge is determined from an interaction curve (or surface for P-M2-M3 hinge) that is constructed by multiplying the specified capacity factor and the ordinates of the interaction curve (or surface) specified for the hinge.
Hinge Loses All Load Carrying Capacity when Lower Bound Strength Is Reached check box. When this check box is checked, the hinge capacity drops to zero after the lower bound strength is reached. When the check box is unchecked, the hinge behavior is linear elastic.
