Interactive steel joist design is a powerful feature that allows the user to review the design results for any steel joist and to interactively change the design assumptions and immediately view the results.
Access Interactive Steel Joist Design and Review as follows:
Select the Analyze menu > Run Analysis command to analyze the model.
Select the Design menu > Steel Joist Design > Start Design/Check command.
Right click on a joist while the design results are displayed on it to enter the interactive design mode and interactively design the joist using the Interactive Steel Joist Design and Review form. If you are not currently displaying design results, click the Design menu > Steel Joist Design > Interactive Design command and then right click a joist to enter the interactive design mode for that joist.
Use the various areas of the Interactive Steel Joist Design and Review form to complete interactive design.
Story ID display box. The story level ID associated with the steel joist.
Beam display box. The label associated with the steel joist.
Design Group display box. Displays the name of the design group to which the joist is assigned if that design group was considered in the design of the beam. If the joist is part of a design group but the design group was not considered in the design, N/A is displayed. If the joist is not assigned to any design group, "NONE" is displayed.
If a joist is redesigned as a result of a change made in the Interactive Steel Joist Design and Review form, the design group is ignored and only the single joist is considered. Thus as soon as you design a joist once in the Interactive Steel Joist Design and Review form, the Design Group box either displays N/A or None.
Auto Select List drop-down list. Displays the name of the auto select list assigned to the joist. If no auto select list is assigned to the joist, NONE is displayed. You can change this item to another auto select list or to NONE while in the form and the design results are immediately updated. If you change this item to NONE, the design is performed for the Current Design/Next Analysis section property.
Optimal display box. If an auto select list is assigned to the joist this list box displays the optimal section as determined by weight. If no auto select list is assigned to the joist, N/A is displayed for this item. You can not directly edit the contents of this list box.
Last Analysis display box. Displays the name of the section that was used for this joist in the last analysis. Thus the joist forces are based on a joist of this section property. For your final design iteration, the Current Design/Next Analysis section property and the Last Analysis section property should be the same. You can not directly edit the contents of this list box.
Current Design/Next Analysis display box. Displays the name of the current design section property. If the joist is assigned an auto select list, the section displayed in this form initially defaults to the optimal section. If no auto select list has been assigned to the joist, the joist design is performed for the section property specified in this edit box. It is important to note that subsequent analyses use the section property specified in this list box for the next analysis section for the beam. Thus the forces and moments obtained in the next analysis are based on this joist size. Change the Current Design/Next Analysis section property by (a) double clicking on any section displayed in the Acceptable Sections List, which updates the Current Design/Next Analysis section property to the section you double clicked or (b) click the Sections button to access the Select Sections form and select a new section from the list.
Important Note: Changes made to the Current Design/Next Analysis section property are permanently saved (until you revise them again) if you click the OK button to exit the Interactive Steel Joist Design and Review form. If you exit the form by clicking the Cancel button, these changes are considered temporary and are not permanently saved.
Acceptable Sections list. The Acceptable Sections list includes the Joist Section name, the Controlling Design Combination, the Stress Ratio Type (flexural, shear, live load deflection), Maximum Stress Ratio, and Unit Weight of the Joist (force/length). Note the following about the Acceptable Sections List
If the joist is assigned an auto select list, many joist sections may be in the Acceptable Sections List. If necessary, use the scroll bar to scroll through the acceptable sections. The optimal section is initially highlighted in the list.
If the joist is not assigned an auto select list, only one joist section is displayed in the Acceptable Sections List. It is the same section as is specified in the Current Design/Next Analysis edit box.
At least one joist will be shown in the Acceptable Sections List, even if none of the joists considered are acceptable. In the case where no joists are acceptable, ETABS displays the section with the lowest ratio in a red font. Thus when you see a single joist displayed in the Acceptable Sections List in a red font, none of the sections considered were acceptable.
Redefine, Temporary, and Show Details Use the buttons in these portions of the form to change the design and immediately review the results.
Sections button. Click this button to access the Select Sections form.
Overwrites button. Click this button to access the Steel Joist Overwrites {Code} form. Use the form to review and revise the steel joist overwrites for the selected frame object.
Combos button. Click this button to access the Design Load Combinations Selection form. Use that form to make temporary revisions to the design load combinations considered for the steel joist and review the results using the Diagrams or Details buttons. This may be useful, for example, to view the results for one particular load combination. The changes made here to the considered design load combinations are temporary. They are not saved when you exit the Interactive Steel Joist Design and Review form, regardless of whether you click OK or Cancel button to exit it.
Diagrams button. Click this button to access the Design Diagrams for {Beam Number} at {StoryID} form. Use the form to plot applied loads, shear, moment, and deflection on the model.
Details button. Click this button to display the Report Viewer and a summary of the design data for the section highlighted in the Acceptable Sections List. The form has buttons to move through the pages of the summary, to Zoom into the individual report pages, print the report, and save it to the Word compatible format.
